Using the research we have collated from collecting 30
examples of each letterform during our summer brief and also working in our
blog groups to create a categorized alphabet soup our first studio task is to
create a set/series/sequence of ten letterforms from the alphabet that explores
and communicated our ‘word’ that has been individuality designated to us by the
‘randomizer’. In this case the word that I have been given is: EXPAND. The
content that I have to deliver consists of 10, 10x10 letterforms of my choice
which relates/represents this particular word.
Initial
response to this brief:
As you can see from the spider diagram above my initial reaction
to the brief was to firstly define the word ‘expand’ briefly, think of
alternative words, which have a similar meaning, and then to decide on the ten
letterforms that I could choose.
EXPAND
1. To increase in
extent, size, volume, scope, etc.: Heat expands most metals. He hopes to expand his company.
2. To spread or stretch out;
unfold: A bird expands its wings.
3. To express in fuller form or
greater detail; develop: to expand a
short story into a novel.
1. To
increase the size, volume, quantity, or scope of; enlarge: expanded her store by adding a second room.
See Synonyms at increase.
2. To
express at length or in detail; enlarge on: expanded
his remarks afterward.
3. To
open (something) up or out; spread out: The bird
expanded its wings and flew off.
4. Mathematics To write (a quantity) as a sum of terms in an extended
form.
After researching about what defines the word expand from
various different websites and dictionaries I came to the conclusion that a lot
of the definitions defined the word ‘expand’ using the four following words:
FOUR MOST COMMON
WORDS THAT RELATE TO EXPAND:
- VOLUME – This is the quantity of the
space of a 3-dimensional space.
- SIZE (HEIGHT) – The
measurement of the vertical distance of a shape.
- SCOPE (ANGLE) – The
extent of the area of or subject matter. The perspective of which a shape
is directed in.
- ENLARGE – The increase in vertical and
horizontal distance of a shape.
In order to help me widen my range of research I decided to find
a couple of inspirational examples from a few of the common words described above
which relate to expand.
1) VOLUME

1) SIZE (HEIGHT)
1) SCOPE (ANGLE)

4) ENLARGE
As you can see from the examples that I have looked
at above each example on its own does not define represent the word expand.
However as a cohort (of images/pieces of type) I think that elements from each
would work well together, such as using a long vertical distance from each end
of the character to skewing the actual origin so that character is positioned at
a certain angle and making the actual character 3D, I think that this would
represent the word ‘expand’ well as it is not just expanding in height at face
value its taking the expansion into consideration and increasing the volume,
size and perspective.
Along with
collating this research after receiving my brief I also have my ’30 examples of
each letterform’ from my summer brief project to work with. As you can see I
have taken a photograph of the collection of postcards that were made to
represent the 30 examples for each letterform. Using my summer brief research
as the foundation to developing my 10, 10x10 typographic letters I will also
use the elements that I have extracted from the research on: Volume, Size,
Scope and Enlargement.
