In order to gain a greater understanding of my partner (Roxxie Blackman) personality, characteristics and creative interests I decided to draw-up a spider diagram gather the main areas that I thought were worthy of researching then explore the area's in order to gain a greater understanding, the four areas included:
- Formal typefaces - Gill Sans
- Designers & Artists
- Russian linguistic letterforms
- Body Art: tattoos and piercings
FORMAL TYPEFACE: GILL SANS
Through the initial stages of conducting this studio brief my partner outlined that her most desired typeface was 'Gill Sans', I thought that this could be the starting point/ basis that I could work from, so from this I decided to look at the original Gill Sans typeface and other variations that are already existing, in order to see the identify the structure that I could work with.
GILL SANS
As we can see the actual typeface itself has a fairy simplistic structure, the use of equal horizontal & vertical lines, curves the body of the shape create a visually balanced set/series of letterforms. The use of the majority of space from baseline to baseline nurtures this idea of visual equality and adds to this heavy formality of the typeface.
GILL SANS LIGHT SHADOWED
Another variation of the Gill Sans range is this lightly shadowed typeface which uses tonal value and rendering to highlight the main body of the typeface. As we can see the counters within this typeface add to the highlighting of this 3-dimensional aspect. Although this has been crafted on computer software the tonal value and rendering can still be extracted and hand drawn, however the crafting quality will rely on the control of the stroke of the pen when creating the letterform.
GILL SANS STD D
Although the Gill Sans typeface is fairly formal, I found it quiet interesting that one of the variations that is existing within the Gill Sans range has such an informal flare to it. The typeface has a hand drawn quality within the typeface along with maintaining its bodily structure through the denser black lines.
PROPAGANDA
As my partner has an interest in Propaganda posters I have decided to look at a couple which are fairly recognisable around the world, which also use typography on them. My partner outlined that she likes Russian Propaganda in specific so I have decided to look at Propaganda as whole then to look at Russian Propaganda.

PROPAGANDA
This Propaganda poster is possibly one if the most recognised Propaganda posters in the world. It is JM Flagg's (1917) poster based on the original poster Lord kitchener poster three years prior.

Before over-commercialed and manipulated in the recent years (2011-2012) the 'keep calm and carry on' British Propaganda poster 1939 was produced by the United Kingdom government. As you can see the design has a simplistic edge and approach , it is communicating a clear message and visually highlights its political context.

RUSSIAN LETTERFORMS
As my partner stated that she can speak Russian and likes Russian Propaganda posters I thought it would fairly interesting to have a look at Russian letterforms which can be translated into English Alphabet, as the English Alphabet has 26 letterforms I found that the Russian Alphabet when translated has 33 letterforms. I have found this image on the internet that translates the Russian alphabet and matches it as closely as possible to the Russian alphabet.

As you can see on the far left hand side of the table is the Russian letterforms which are equivalent to the English alphabet. Some of the letterforms from both languages seem to be similar in there bodily structure however other letterforms differ greatly.
ARTIST & DESIGNERS
JESSICA HISCHE
As we can see Jessica Hische typography pieces are intricate in terms of the detail that she has rendered into each letterform, however the main bodily structure of her pieces are fairly formal. The visual quality of the piece is definitive by the use of colour and the composition of the type on the canvas. The use of mark making through horizontal lines within the main typeface adds a sense of personality and character to the pieces.
CRAIG WARD
This collection of images I have collected by Craig Ward clearly shows that his type work is rather varied in terms of the way its constructed. As we can some of his work is formal such as the 'Love Child' piece shown at the bottom, on the other hand other pieces of his work seems to be fluid and free in its element. Both practical and vector pieces see maintain a sense of simplicity through the use of contrasting colours, this is consistent fundamental element running through the series of these pieces.
ALBERTO SEVESO
This series of type by Alberto Seveso seems rather dense in its structure and weight, however this initial sense that we get from his work seems to be mellowed by the use of soft watercolours which fill in inner body of the type. The majority of the characters are legible within the typeface however others are slightly obscure. This formality which is outline through the basic construction within the typeface allows the designer to experiment with the application of colour without overwhelming the audience.
HOWARD HODGKIN

Prints: Although the work by Howard Hodgkin is not typography based I feel it was important to look at his work as his prints have been produced from traditional print processes. I also feel its important to look at my partners other design interests, form these prints I can establish that she has an interest in the application of primary and secondary colours.
BODY ART (tattoo's & body piercings)
http://www.behance.net/gallery/TATTOO-INFOGRAPHICS/3065641
Although this is a info graphic representing statistics about tattoos I still feel the actual typography which has been used has relevance to my research. It is fairly interesting that the tattoo artist has created added tonal value behind the character 'G' on the right hand side of the neck.
