Study task 1: LOVE & HATE

Our first task for context of practice within this course we were asked to select one piece of graphic design that we love and one piece of graphic design that we dislike strongly. After finding an example of each we were then asked to give an explanation of why we had selected the two example and the reasons behind our choice.

LOVE:

I love this piece of design as it is informative of the city/location that the photograph is representing 'New York', the designer has clearly used a washed out colour palette which has given the piece warmth and a sense that the reason during the capturing of this piece is Autumn (Autumn is my most favoured season and I visited New York during Autumn in 2010, the piece takes me back to my visit). The designer has used a a simplistic broad typeface which sits well on the bottom sector of the piece, the possible use of traditional film photography is also another reasons I am attracted to this piece of graphic design.

HATE:

Although I respect that someone has created this vector design i strongly dislike the final outcome of the piece. I feel that the use of colours are extremely-bland, the overall look of the piece seems far too digitalised, along with this idea of it being bland I feel that the content has no substance to it, there is no form of clear communication of a message or meaning, the graphical 'vector/digital' aspect is obvious however the visual communication of a meaning or message is unclear. Overall the piece lacks an audience response.
